黑料老司机鈥檚 Student Dance Company performs first live show in 2 years
For the first time in two years, 黑料老司机鈥檚 (黑料老司机) student dance company, DancEstrella, will perform live in person! Students, employees, and community members are invited to 鈥渁nd the heart beats on鈥 Dec. 3 and 4 in the Performing Arts Center on campus, 3000 N. Dysart Road, Avondale.
"After such a difficult period in everyone鈥檚 life, we are thrilled to have DancEstrella back onstage for the first time since December 2019,鈥 said Professor Janaea Lyn McAlee, Residential Dance Faculty.
Two performances will take place at 3 and 7 p.m. on both days. Admission is free and audience members will have the opportunity to participate in a brief discussion with the dancers after the shows.
鈥淭he discussion is a regular feature at the end of every DancEstrella show,鈥 Professor McAlee said. 鈥淭he dancers take questions and compliments from the audience so they can have an exchange and understand how their work was experienced. It鈥檚 an extension of the feedback process that is part of creating the dances in our classes.鈥
The performance features practicum dances by Assistant Directors Carissa Salgado-Garcia and Jade Teller; duets by Choreography 2 dance majors Denise Lopez and Audrey Richards; collaborative choreography by students in Performance classes; and a full company work by Professor McAlee.
Jade鈥檚 piece is called 鈥淒istractions.鈥
鈥淚n life, we have our distractions, whether we want them or not,鈥 she said. 鈥淎nd depending on what the distraction is, it could be good or bad. My piece is about showing those distractions and how we can get tangled in them.鈥
Carissa鈥檚 dance, 鈥淎 Piece of You,鈥 is about losing loved ones and coming to terms with losing them.
鈥淚t's very emotionally driven,鈥 she said. 鈥淚 lost my grandmother in December of last year and not long after, I lost a great aunt who I was close to. This helped me grieve and honor their memory.鈥
Neither Jade nor Carissa will perform in the dances they choreographed, but they will perform in several different pieces throughout the show, and neither could be more excited to return to the stage for a live performance.
鈥淚鈥檓 very stoked to be able to perform in person,鈥 Jade said. 鈥淗aving shows virtually was great because it meant we still had shows, but I feel like you should experience something this intimate in person.鈥
Carissa couldn鈥檛 agree more.
鈥淚鈥檓 so excited to be able to perform in person again,鈥 she said. 鈥淭his is what I have loved the most 鈥 being able to perform and connect with the audience.鈥
Professor McAlee said the dances are based on the students鈥 experience of loss and personal struggle but also unexpected gifts and self-determination that have all been a part of the pandemic.
鈥淣ow that we are back in person and able to dance and create together, students have wanted to express both the difficulties they have been through and a newfound commitment to living the life they truly want,鈥 she said.
Masks are required while indoors on campus and seating is limited. Seating is available on a first-come, first-served basis at the door.
